Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Our Programs

Have questions about getting started at Electric City BJJ? Here are answers to what we hear most about our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai classes in Colonie.

Not at all. Most of our members walk in with zero experience. Our beginner-friendly classes at Electric City BJJ start with the fundamentals, and our coaches and training partners help you learn at a safe, steady pace.

Yes. We offer a free trial so you or your child can experience a class firsthand before committing. Reach out through our contact page and we'll get you scheduled for a session that fits your week.

Our Kids program is built for ages 5 to 11 and our Teens program for ages 12 to 16. Classes are grouped by age so kids train with peers and learn jiu-jitsu in a structured, encouraging environment.

Gi training uses the traditional uniform, with grips on the collar and sleeves that reward control and patience. No-gi is done in shorts and a rash guard at a faster pace. We train both at Electric City BJJ, and beginners are welcome in either.

For your first BJJ class, comfortable athletic clothing like shorts and a t-shirt is perfect. If you already own a gi, bring it. For Muay Thai, athletic wear works great, and we'll point you to any gear you need as you progress.

Two to three classes a week is a great starting point for steady progress, and our schedule offers morning, midday, and evening options to fit around work and family. You can always train more as the habit builds.

We are a family-style academy founded by a competitive black belt who has trained with some of the best in the sport. We focus on real technique, a welcoming community, and helping every member, from first-timer to competitor, reach their goals.
